Why we built it

Everyone has the same problem: you own more than you can remember, and it's scattered across rooms, boxes, closets, job sites, and storage units. When you need something, you're left digging — or worse, buying a second one because you couldn't find the first.

WheresIt fixes that with the one thing everyone already does: take photos. Snap a picture, and your belongings become a searchable catalog you can query in plain language.

I built WheresIt because I was moving and couldn't find anything. Between my wife and me, we had dive gear, computer parts, motorcycle parts, and tools scattered across boxes with no real system. On top of that, our businesses run out of three shops around the city, each with its own saws, drills, and tools — and my wife also manages a condo she Airbnbs. Between the move, the shops, and the condo, keeping track of what we owned and where it was had become genuinely unmanageable.

So I wrote a simple tool to fix it for myself. It worked — really well, actually. A year later we moved again, and this time it was even more chaotic: the businesses had expanded, and our house got a little more crowded when my in-laws moved in. The tool I'd built for one move ended up carrying us through a much bigger one.

Around that time I mentioned it to a friend at a major software company in the US. He took a look and immediately saw the value — he had a rental property of his own and was dealing with the exact same problem. That conversation is what turned a tool I'd built for myself into WheresIt.app.
